An 8-year-old boy presents for a health maintenance visit; there are no acute complaints. Past medical history is unremarkable, except for a simple febrile seizure at age 4 years. Family history is remarkable in that his father, who is now 45 years old, has been treated for angina pectoris and hypertension since the age of 40 years. His total cholesterol has been as high as 320 mg/dL; he is currently being treated with a statin. The boy's development has been normal, with A's and B's in school. He participates in organized sports 4 times per week. Height is at the 75th percentile and weight is at the 50th percentile. Vital signs are normal, as is the remainder of the examination. His parents ask whether it is appropriate to perform lipid screening at this time.
