One group particularly exposed to the impact of the lack of health literacy is the migrant community. Migration is a phenomenon involving hundreds of millions of people, with major social and economic impacts on migrants in their countries of origin and destination, and on their communities. In an era of an increasingly diverse national population, the next generation of Public Health professionals will need to respond to emerging health issues related to migration. Public Health professionals also need to understand why people migrate, the situations they live in, and the factors influencing their health-seeking behaviors. Much of the focus on migrant health has been on specific disease incidence, infectious and chronic diseases among migrants such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. However, the topic of Health Literacy invites an the analysis of a broader conception of immigrant health.
