Patients' medical insurance may pay part or none of the medication expenses resulting in the patients paying out of pocket. Having to decide on paying for a medication or not eating is a very unfortunate choice for patients living in one of the most prosperous countries in the world. A rethink of incentives for medication costs is necessary for patients to obtain needed medication, to stay adherent to a treatment regimen, and to still have a quality of life. The problem is that a patient's medical insurance may cover part or none of medications' costs. The significance of this problem for advanced practice nurses is that their patients may incur medical debt which impacts the social, emotional, financial, and educational aspects of their patients' lives. The patients have to decide, for example, if $50 goes toward the prescribed regular insulin or toward gas and groceries in the budget. The theoretical framework for this research if developed or identified, is the Pender's Health Promotion Model. (Polit and Beck, 2021; Shahabi et al., 2022).
