Discussion Post: Neighbor Playing Music in Very Early Morning
This topic is noise and it's important to remember that "noise" is unwanted sound. So, I want to stress that what someone thinks is "noise" might be welcomed music (for instance) to someone else. For example, your next door neighbor is blaring his favorite Country Western song at 1 am in his backyard while you are trying to sleep.... not only do you HATE that type of music, but you are trying to sleep!
The Federal Government attempted to regulate noise but due to budget cuts and politics it was pushed down to the States to handle. And, as most of you are aware, most states don't take noise control very seriously. Have you ever wondered how a Harley Davidson can roar by you emitting engine exhaust noise well in excess of the California Vehicle Code's limit? Well, very easily: the CHP and local police agencies choose not to enforce the noise limit! I personally believe that noise is a serious public health problem, especially in areas experiencing rapid development. For instance, there is a developmental trend to build denser communities - have you been to downtown Glendale/Los Angeles/Burbank/Pasadena/etc? While it's nice to have residential lofts built in the center of town if you want to walk to dinner/entertainment/etc...... it can be difficult sleeping at night! And, as I'm sure most of you have experienced: interrupted sleep can wreak havoc on your well-being.
Tell us about an instance in your life where noise interrupted your life. This can be your neighbors bothering you when you were trying to sleep, a time when you couldn't study due to noise, etc. Also, mention any friends/family members (or yourself) that suffer from hearing loss due to age/ear damage/etc. If noise has never bothered you then feel free to discuss anything from the the lecture or book chapter.
