This provides the team with flexibility and continuity when another teammate is unable to play. A utility player is usually going to serve as a backup; however, their versatility has been proven to be invaluable to their teams. In the NBA, they give the Sixth Man of the Year Award. This is given to the player who performs the best when he gets substituted in (a.k.a. the sixth man) for a teammate that started the game. In both sports, these players are not necessarily going to be your all-stars. However, they still serve an integral role when their skills and abilities are needed to bridge the gap for their team.
