Part 1: Nonverbal Communication Understood
A. Consider a time when you have received "mixed messages" between verbal communication and nonverbal communication.
Answer these questions: What specifically happened? Which behavior was more believable? Why?
B. Offer two examples of nonverbal messages in action -- the first (1) should demonstrate how gender or culture influences the use and interpretation of nonverbal cues, and the second (2) should demonstrate the role that media and technology play in nonverbal messaging. Then, utilizing the text, website and videos answer the following questions:
Have you ever been aware of microexpressions? What are your thoughts (be specific)?
List the channels of nonverbal communication.
From the list in #2, choose one specific channel and bold that term. Consider a time when you encountered an interesting use of this specific channel and answer the following questions:
- What types of assumptions did you make about the person engaging in this behavior?
- What are some of your beliefs about the appropriateness of this behavior?
- What are some ways you might improve on the performance of these nonverbal behaviors?
Part 3: Ethics Understood
1. Use two different dictionaries (online references are fine) and define the following terms from each dictionary/reference/source: ethics, morality, virtue, right and good. Then give an example of each word to show you clearly understand the differences. This means you should have five words, 10 definitions and 5 examples, like this:
