Assignment:
1. For over 50 years, the United States has had only one answer to the question of how to save lives and reduce harm from drug use: punishment and prison. Has this policy worked in reducing the availability of drugs and crime? If not, what should politicians be doing differently?
2. "Gun show loophole" is a political term in the United States referring to the sale of firearms by private sellers, including those done at gun shows, that do not require the seller to conduct a federal background check of the buyer. This is also called the private sale exemption. Under federal law, any person may sell a firearm to a federally unlicensed resident of the state where they reside, as long as they do not know or have reasonable cause to believe that the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms. Closing this loophole has been a political hot potato. Why do you think political leaders have refused to close this loophole?
3. Partly due to the gun show loophole, if someone is shot in Mexico, odds are the gun came from the United States. Somewhere between 70 and 90 percent of firearms found at Mexican crime scenes are traced back North of the border. In a bold move, the Mexican Government is suing US gun manufacturers in Federal Court. Who is to blame? Political leaders, gun manufacturers, or gun dealers/gun shows?
