Question

While working throughout this course, my understanding of the professional role changed. It helped me gain a deeper understanding of the ethical challenges that we may encounter moving forward, in addition to the importance of building and fostering a strong respect-based therapeutic relationship early in the sessions to avoid therapeutic ruptures and elicit positive change alongside the client rather than for the client (MACP Skills Learning Lab, n.d.; Slay-Westbrook, 2017). A primary insight regarding the differences between counselling and other professions was the inability to diagnose but rather assess the client; though I was aware that we are unable to prescribe medications, prior to this course, I was under the impression that diagnosing was part of our required skillset, something that I am now reflecting on. Upon completing this course, my view of how vigilant a counsellor must be in continued education and being culturally intelligent has increased; though I felt that I was aware of the diverse cultural aspects given my work experience, this course made it clear that there is always room for improvement and an expansion for growth.

Has participating in this first course inspired a sense of excitement as we work further towards this career? Or maybe a sense of nervousness?
