Weekly Written Assignment-Week 1 (Discussion 2)
Compare (Harvest of Shame and Triangle Fire): The workers had similar working conditions in both videos, such as low safety standards and pay. The employees were exploited and worked long hours for barely any money. They couldn't afford food essentials such as milk because they only made $1. Evidently, the factory and landowner only cared about their business and not their workers.
Contrast (Harvest of Shame and Triangle Fire): In the Triangle Fire, the significant difference is that the workers realized that the treatment they were receiving was unacceptable. They knew they deserved better pay and working conditions, so workers decided to do something about it, so they went on strike. Unfortunately, that was not the case In the Harvest of Shame. Even though the workers were mistreated and worked in deplorable conditions, they didn't want to anything to change their situation.
Theory/Concept/Linkage (Harvest of Shame or Triangle):
a) "Work is not simply an economic transaction; work is a fully human activity such that employees are entitled to fair treatment and opportunities to have input into decisions that affect their daily lives" (Budd, 2015, pg. 7).
b) In the Triangle Fire, the workers didn't have fair treatment and opportunities to have input into decisions that affected their daily lives. They worked almost all day for less than $2 since they were docked for electricity, thread, and needles. Workers deserve dignity and respect. No one should be exploited that way and work in deplorable conditions as they did to barely have anything left to eat.
