Question
There are many ways in which talking heals us. This can happen both conscious and unconsciously. Many times we can be conscious of the thoughts or behaviors we are having, but be unable to get to the root of why it's happening, or simply be in denial. There is also instances where these thoughts and behaviors can be subconscious, making us unaware of what we are thinking and in turn unaware of how it's affecting us, or that it's even affecting us. In both of this instances talking about our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and situations, helps release feelings we may have and it helps us not feel so ashamed about our thoughts, as they can be more common than we may think. Communicating our thoughts and feelings can also helps us see our situation from a different point of view and it encourages connections which can have positive results in our mental health. An example we can see in our book is that of Bertha Pappenheim, which developed negative health symptoms after her fathers death, these eventually disappeared after she decided to talk about what had happened.
