Question

Louisa Martin is a medical assistant in Portland, Oregon. She has been summoned to a hearing to show cause why she should not be charged with "practicing radiologic technology without a license." When the radiation control officer made an unannounced visit to Dr. Whitfield's medical office, Louisa was in the x-ray room with a patient. The patient was lying on the x-ray table and Louisa was manipulating the dials on the x-ray control panel. Louisa testifies that she did not practice radiologic technology. "I never pushed the button," she said. "I would prepare the patient and the room for the examination, and then Dr. Whitfield would come by the room and make the exposure." Louisa is guilty of practicing radiologic technology illegally because Oregon Administrative Rules state: "The 'Practice of Radiologic Technology' shall be defined as but not limited to the use of ionizing radiation upon a human being for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes including the physical positioning of the patient, the determination of exposure parameters, and the handling of the ionizing radiation equipment."
