A family can handle the death of a loved one by being supportive of each other, being able to actively listen, communicating effectively, and seeking therapy services for the family. Death is not an easy thing to accept for there can be different stages like grief, denial, and other effects that can take place. A family that is able to comfort each other while being open and honest about one's feelings is a start. Also being open-minded and not taking things personally when someone in the family shuts down and may become distant can be a way of how someone in the family copes with their emotions. Death doesn't always have to be viewed as a bad thing for everyone has to leave the earth one day. A family therapist can help with the cognitive behaviors that individuals may be experiencing and help create coping skills as to how to tackle certain emotions. A harmful way for a family to deal with the death of a loved one can be a lack of self-care, depression, guilt, and self-blame.
