Aim: The aim of this unit is to provide learners with knowledge in database systems development and enable them to develop strong database design and development skills.

Learning Outcome 1: Understand basic concepts of database systems.
1.1 Describe the concept of normalisation in the storage

Scenario

You have recently been appointed as database designer for EasyTravel Group in London. EasyTravel Group is one of UK's largest travel platforms. EasyTravel leverages their platform and technology capabilities across an extensive portfolio of businesses and brands to orchestrate the movement of people and the delivery of travel experiences on a both local and global scale.

EasyTravel Group's portfolio ticks off everything from beach holidays and city breaks through to lakes and mountains getaways with over 15,000 combinations to choose from. Plus, EasyTravel's flexible flight options, taxi transfers and flights from local airport mean a traveller can design his/her perfect holiday.

You have joined to the new fleet of database designers to manage EasyTravel Group's growing portfolio.

Task 1

You line manager Laura Buckingham wants to have a clear understanding of your knowledge of database management systems and you need to explain to her the database management systems that you want to utilise for their new brands. You have agreed a date for a meeting and you wish to leave him with a written report covering various aspects of database management systems which includes:

Task 2
You line manager Laura was happy with your report and decided to give you a task to produce a demo relational database for their new project, EasyTravel Media Solutions where they build innovative digital marketing solutions to engage travellers on their global networks of trusted travel brands. You have to produce a database solution for them to manage huge volume of customer data.

Instructions

a. Using a suitable software, produce a comprehensive design using E-R Modelling for a fully functional system.
b. Using a suitable software, design a ‘Relational Database System' using appropriate design tools and techniques.
c. Design and run queries on the database using demo data provided by the lab instructor.
d. Integrate system security and constraints for a database system.

Task 3 Lab demonstration and Lab report

You have successfully created a database system. Now you are called in for a demonstration. In this stage, you will test the database systems live and produce required documentation as asked by the panel.

Instructions

a. Test the system against user and system requirements.
b. Use query tools to produce business reports. A range of query requests will be provided by the lab instructor such as finding sales information, revenue information or total number of users etc.
c. Produce technical and user documentation for a system.
d. Recommend improvements that may be required to ensure the continued effectiveness of the database system.
