Sex steroids have been implicated in a wide range of cancers, including breast, ovarian, uterine, testicular and prostate cancer.

Select one of these cancers and discuss the role that these steroids may have on the growth and pathogenesis of the cancer.

Within one of the categories above (e.g. breast cancer) some subtypes of the cancers affected by sex steroids while others are not. How might you determine clinically whether the cells from a particular cancer (from a sample obtained from a biopsy or surgery, for example) are likely to be responsive to specific hormones?

Why is it important to determine whether a cancer is or is not hormone-responsive? How does this information guide treatment options and affect the prognosis for an individual? For the cancer type that you selected, describe specific therapeutic approaches that are used for those cancers that have been shown to be hormone-dependent or responsive.
