Communicating with employees is a critical skill. However, it is not always pleasant. Often organizations will have a disruptive employee or there may be interpersonal issues. For each of the following scenarios discuss how the conversation should be approached with the employee and what principles should be followed. Be specific as to what you would say, how you would say it, and any anticipated counter- reactions. 

  1. You are the new manager over 14 employees of your unit. You are younger than many of the employees you supervise. The previous manager was very lax and permissive on many issues. One employee, Bob, has been a 25-year employee with the company.  Many employees follow his lead due to his experience. Bob persistently and unapologetically comes in late every day by about 8 minutes. He is often late to meetings also, which is disruptive since the meeting has started before he enters. You have already mentioned this to him once previously.
  2. Derek is a hard worker in the unit. He has been here for several years. You just received a complaint by Sally, a female employee who believes Derek has made inappropriate comments to her the past two months. There is nothing in Derek's file concerning similar prior issues or warnings. It is not clear if anyone has witnessed this behavior or not.
  3. Robert and Sam have had a growing interpersonal conflict on a group project. There is an originating history from about 6 months ago of a major conflict, which never seemed to have been resolved.  Both are integral to the project they are working on and pulling one off the project is not possible. Today, their conflict was particularly heated to the point of almost being physical.
  4. Multiple employees are complaining about Carl. He has a personal hygiene issue which is becoming disruptive in group meetings in close quarters. Several team members attempted to drop hints which were not picked up on. They have come to you to resolve this issue with him.
