GRM3001 Introduction to Quantitative Methods - Gulf College
Programme - BMS, A&F, MM, BE, BIS
Level 3
Learning outcome 1: Use and demonstrate understanding of basic mathematical terminology and notation
Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate an ability to quantify and handle data in a variety of forms
Assignment Task
Write an assignment of 2,000 words using references to relevant theories, concepts and appropriately chosen examples about the following topics.
1. Weighted percentages
2. Algebraic fractional equation
3. Equation of the line
Your report should contain the following:
• Introduction: Overall plan of the assignment with reference to the topics, the methods and procedures and their applications. (200 words equivalent)
• Solution and Discussion Weighted percentage
Student needs to include the discussion of the concept of weighted percentages. (100 words equivalent)
Provide an example problem about weighted percentage to determine whether the student passed the module having three components. Explain your calculation. (300 words equivalent)
Provide an example problem about weighted percentage to determine how much to score in a particular component to pass the module having three components. Explain your calculation. (300 words equivalent)
Algebraic fractional equation
Student needs to provide an example of fractional algebraic equation containing binomial terms in the denominators. Find the least common denominator to clear out common factors.
Simplify to express to quadratic equation. Apply the method of factoring to find the value of the variable. Discuss the procedure of your calculation. Check the roots in the original equation. (450 words equivalent)
Equation of the line
Student needs to provide an equation of the line in slope-intercept form. Draw the graph of the equation of the line using the table of values for the independent variable x and the dependent y containing 6 ordered pairs. The discussion of plotting ordered pairs from the table of values to trace or draw the line should be included. The inclusion of the calculation of the value of the gradient or slope using two(2) ordered from the table of values to verify the nature of the inclination of the line as well as the relationship between the dependent and independent variables should be explained. (450 words equivalent)
• Conclusion - Student needs to summarise the key points in the discussion. (200 words equivalent)
• References - Student needs to provide at least five varied sources like printed books, e-books, websites, journals and other printed materials.
