Discussion 4: Grief & Loss/Resources for Children
Grief & Loss/Resources for Children
The Coalition for Grieving Students provides a library of learning to support grieving students. First, visit the website and review the module options. Select two of the modules for a more thorough review, including a viewing of the videos for the modules you selected. Then, join the discussion by answering the questions below:
Now, join the discussion.
1. List the name of each of the modules you reviewed and answer the following questions.
- Briefly (2 - 3 sentences) summarize the purpose of the module.
- What are your initial impressions?
- Who are the stakeholders (those involved in making these processes evident in the school and community environments)?
- How can teachers, administrators, mental health professionals work to address these issues in the school environment?Who else (e.g., nurses, school resource officers, parents) has a role in the mental health of students following the death of a special person? What is their role?
2. Find another resource online - an article, a module, an activity - that speaks to this concept of death in childhood, and how it interacts with the school environment. Share your findings (and a link to the resource), discussing some of the strengths and weaknesses. The goal is to create a library of resources to share with your peers.
3. Reflect on the Sesame Street video. What are your reactions to the way they depict grief? It is developmentally appropriate for children? Why or why not? What would you change, if anything? Is Big Bird the right "messenger" for these messages to children?
