Real Gas Law: Gravimetric Determination of the Second Virial Coefficient of CO2

1. What experimental conditions (volume, pressure, and temperature) are conducive to ideal gas behavior?

2. Define the compression factor (Z). Is Z going to be larger or smaller than 1 for a gas in which attractive forces dominate?

3. A student plots Z-1 versus (1/Vm) based on data collected during an isothermal expansion of CO2. What would you expect the y-intercept to be and why is this so?

4. The precision (readability) of your balance is 1 mg, this means masses under 0.5 mg cannot be detected. The volume of the vessel is 0.5 L and temperature is 25oC. Assuming ideal gas law conditions, what is the maximum pressure in a vessel containing CO2, in which the residual mass cannot be detected?

5. (A) Calculate the molar volume of CO2 at 25oC and 10 bar by treating it as a van der Waals gas (a = 3.610 atm L2 mol-2 ; b = 4.29 × 10-2 L mol-1).

(B) Calculate the molar volume of CO2 gas at a temperature of 25oC and pressure of 10 bar using the ideal gas law.

(C) Determine the percent deviation from ideality for the van der Waals gas.
