On your own, code the 4 interview transcripts found in Case 2. Do this by downloading your own copy of the Case 2 Word document and using the "highlight" and "comment" features in Word (or in whatever Word processing program you are using) to code and write memos in the interview transcripts.
You should come up with 3-4 codes (themes) and highlight instances of the code in the text (using a different color for each code). (See YouTube video: What Coding Looks Like.) For example, if I noticed that the music in the restaurant was a common theme in the answers across multiple interviews, I might decide I need a "music" code. I would, therefore, go through and highlight all the phrases that relate to music. For some of these instances, I might add memos about things I'm noticing or questions that I think need to be addressed, using the comment feature in Word.
I've modified the transcript below and coded it for a "music" theme to illustrate. (This is not the actual transcript you'll be coding. I rewrote it to demonstrate a "music" theme.) Notice the text that I highlighted and the comments that I added as I was coding the transcript. If I was coding for additional themes (for example, tips/gratuity), then phrases related to those topics would be highlighted in a different color.
Example Transcript
Coding the transcripts will allow you to notice patterns, and it will allow you to easily find specific examples of certain themes, share them with your team and possibly include them in your report.
For example, when drawing conclusions, I might ask myself "Do people at the restaurant generally agree about the music?" I can answer that question really quickly by looking for all the yellow highlighting across interviews. When writing my report, if I want to explain that there was a lot of disagreement about the music, I could easily grab an example of a positive comment and a negative comment to illustrate my point (without having to search through the entire interview).
