This is based on The Novel, George Orwell's 1984

Discuss and analyze the nature and effectiveness of 2 different methods/strategies that The Party (the government of Oceania in 1984) uses to maintain hegemony over the citizens; also included in your discussion must be two similar references/examples drawn from present and/or historical reality (local and/or global).

Choose the 2 different methods/strategies from the following list:

1. Constant surveillance by the Government of citizens' daily activities (e.g. telescreens, posters)

2. Rewriting of history ("he who controls the past, controls the present..."; this is what Winston's job is at The Ministry of Truth

3. Use of propaganda/disinformation; lies disseminated as truth (Kellyanne Conway's "alternative facts" perhaps?)

4. Keeping citizens in a perpetually distracted state of paranoia, mistrust and indulging in gratification and dulling of the senses (e.g. production of pornography and alcohol by the State; a perpetual, constant state of war with ever-shifting enemies and alliances)

5. Torture and intimidation (physical and emotional); brainwashing. Winston Smith at the end does not only say "2+2=5", he believes it, which is key to his release at the end. He is no longer a threat.
