Discussion 2

Topic: City-Pair Analysis Summary

Thread: Take some time to familiarize yourself with the provided Class Project Excel file. Open the file and begin at the START HERE tab. The first text box provides a background, and the following boxes provide an overview of content for each tab in the file. There are four blue tabs that correspond to the four key assignments of the air transportation analysis for this course. The blue tab titled; City-Pair Analysis will be considered for this assignment.

You have been tasked by the Chief Operations Officer (COO, your professor) to give a summary of travel history and to consider the impact to travel if the company decides to purchase an aggregate mine in Afton, OK. The City-Pair Analysis tab is the product of your analysis of company travel for last year and it also includes data if the company were to expand. Prepare a two-to-five-minute narrated PowerPoint for the COO. This briefing must include the following:

1. A short "elevator" pitch that highlights your excitement about how much time could be saved IF the company were to utilize an on-demand travel solution.

2. Include the number of travel miles the COO travels and the number of travel miles the company travels as a whole.

3. Select a turboprop and then a jet in the Make/Model drop down menu and highlight the time savings.

4. Create a visual (chart, table, or graphic) that illustrates company travel.

5. OPTIONAL: Consider the city-pair data tables to the right (On-Demand and Airline Travel Models). Role play and make appropriate comments about travel demand.

Discussion 3

Topic: Market Analysis Summary

Thread: Do not forget about the details of the short briefing you made to the COO last week. In fact, you may want to input the aircraft you select for the briefing for this week into the City-Pair tab and compare how the different block speeds affect aircraft utilization (in hours). You will need to use the Class Project Excel file for this assignment.

You have been tasked by the Chief Operations Officer (COO, your professor) to give a summary of possible aircraft that could meet the travel demands of the company. Consider the Aircraft Data and RV Analysis tabs before settling on the Quick Compare tab for this assignment. Once at the Quick Compare tab, use the drop-down menus at the top of each column to select at least four aircraft to compare. You may need to do an internet search to familiarize yourself with some of these aircraft models. Prepare a two-to-five-minute narrated PowerPoint for the COO. The briefing must include the following:

1. A short "elevator" pitch that highlights your interest in the variety of aircraft available to meet the travel needs of the company. Focus on introducing key terms like range, speed, available seats, etc.

2. Provide the make/model's name for the four aircraft selected and highlight the purchase price.

3. Compare the different specifications and performance data.

4. Create a table that includes that data you decide to compare (minimum of ten areas of comparison).

5. Compare the estimated hours of utilization based on the travel miles provided in the City-Pair Analysis worksheet.

Discussion 4

Topic: Selection Matrix Summary

Thread: The selection matrix is a subjective tool that may be used to help differentiate a particular make and model of aircraft. Unlike the Quick Compare, the Selection Matrix takes the subjective input of key travelers and builds a scoring system based on interviews. Key traveler interviews indicate what areas are important and score accordingly. You will need to use the Class Project Excel file for this assignment.

You have been tasked by the Chief Operations Officer (COO, your professor) to give more detail about how the aircraft you selected would meet the specific needs of the company. Begin by entering the same aircraft you selected for the Quick Compare briefing. Next, the "needs" for this assignment are highlighted by the weight (a scale of 1 to 4 with 4 being the highest level of importance) entered in the yellow cell for each category. Matrix categories and level of subcategories come directly from conversations from key decision makers within the company. The selection matrix has been preloaded with a weight factor of "1" for each category. Role play a bit here and enter new weight factors for the provided categories. Remember "4" is the highest weight factor. Do not use a weight factor of "0" for this assignment.

Consider total score under each aircraft name. The data variable for the selected aircraft is provided on each category line. The scoring or Factor Value for each category is done by multiplying the Weight Factor by the Item Score. The Total Score is tallied by adding all the Factor Values for each category. A weight percentage is provided next to each Factor Value to indicate the weight percentage that particular category has on the Total Score. Prepare a two-to-five-minute narrated PowerPoint for the COO. The briefing must include the following:

1. A short "elevator" pitch that highlights your interest in the output of the selection matrix and how you can begin to see the pros and cons of various makes and models.

2. Provide how your interviews influenced the selection of each Weight Factor--provide the Weight Factor for each Category.

3. Highlight the Total Scores for your selected aircraft. Comment on which categories helped influence scoring for each aircraft.

4. Add to the previous table or create a separate table that highlights your findings.

Discussion 5

Topic: Cost of Operation Summary

Thread: This is the last of the four core assignments that must be included into your final proposal and presentation. For this assignment we consider operational costs. The Cost of Operation tab in the Class Project Excel file provides a variety of input cells, but all you will need to do for this assignment is enter the aircraft at the top of each column to the right of the red instructions box.

You have been tasked by the Chief Operations Officer (COO, your professor) to give a summary of the costs associated with the aircraft you're considering. Enter the aircraft in the dropdown. IF you would like to consider operating costs without debt service, input "100" in Row 9 for each aircraft you selected. Rows 32, 33, 34, and 35 are key output rows for this worksheet. Take a moment to see how aircraft block speed influences utilization hours, estimated yearly costs, and estimated cost/hour. Prepare a two-to-five-minute narrated PowerPoint for the COO. The briefing must include the following:

1. A short "elevator" pitch video highlights associated costs and the benefits you expect.

2. Provide the make/model's name for the four aircraft selected.

3. Compare Fixed Costs (Row 8).

4. Compare Variable Costs (Row 16).

5. Compare Estimated Hours of Utilization (Row 33).

6. Compare Estimated Yearly Cost (Row 34).

7. Compare Estimated Cost/hour (Row 35).

8. What would it cost to charter an aircraft for the same amount of time?

9. Create a table that helps to organize and present important cost data to the COO.
