Palmer Industries had a surge in the demand for golf carts over the past three months and needed to improve and speed up its production. As a result, the production manager of the Palm Springs manufacturing plant developed a new procedure to see if the plant could produce golf carts faster. The old procedure allowed a golf cart to be assembled in 2.38 hours. A test run using the new method resulted in 27 golf carts being assembled in 1.56 hours with a standard deviation of .45.
