According to globalsecurity early research on the Vietnam War centered around 1965 on the American military's tactical, operational, and strategic choices. They included studies of the broader military strategy as well as history of specific battles, including the Tet Offensive. Before 1968, there were, in my opinion, historians. since the "search and destroy" strategy was introduced in 1965. Before using the strategy in the field, historians must have been conducting research in the field. Historians portrayed the American military as an apolitical actor, downplaying politics in favor of technical and logistical considerations. The 1980s saw a shift in this perspective as academics started to pay more attention to how politics and culture played a part in the conflict. This new academic movement aimed to contextualize the conflict within the broader framework of American history and society.
