In the first ever global treaty that ends violence and harassment at work, the federal government ratified it. The Minister of Labour ratified International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190, which ensures workplace violence and harassment is prohibited, prevented, and addressed.
O'Regan Jr.: "Nobody should face violence or harassment on the job, not in Canada, not abroad. We're joining countries worldwide to ensure workers have a safe, respectful workplace."
Canada chaired the standard-setting committee at the International Labour Conference, so it played a key role in drafting and promoting the treaty. A part of the treaty recognizes the importance of unions in preventing violence and harassment on the job. Statistically, 25% of Canadian women and 17% of Canadian men experienced workplace sexual harassment in 2019.
