Five-Year Plan Exercise
Below is a sample five-year plan for a sophomore majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Culture & Communications. Use this to develop your own five-year plan for your major and concentration. As you develop your plan think carefully about the following questions and be sure your plan addresses them:
- How do you want to be a citizen of the world? What matters to you? What do you want your life's work to be about?
- What are the remaining requirements for your major (and concentration, if applicable)?
- If you have a second major, what are its outstanding requirements?
- If you have a minor, what are its outstanding requirements?
- What general education requirements do you still need to fulfill?
- How much do you plan to work at a paid job over the next semesters? Are there other factors (family matters, medical issues, etc.) that you know you will need to take into account in order to plan?
- What kinds of internships should you carry out in order to prepare for a post-collegiate career?
- What are a few possibilities for an entry-level job after you graduate, and what sorts of classes might be especially helpful in preparing you for those possibilities?
- Do you plan to study abroad? When and where?
- Are there fellowships or scholarships that you should plan to apply for?
(PLEASE NOTE: The following sample five-year plan is entirely hypothetical! Use it only as a starting point for developing your own five-year plan that reflects your own academic standing and interests.)
