Question: A strain of chickens has very short legs. A chicken breeder wanted to create a true-breeding strain of short-legged chickens. To do this, he crossed short-legged chickens with one another for several generations. Disappointingly, his crosses always produced mixtures of short-legged and normal-legged offspring. Combining the results of all the matings, he observed a total of 207 short-legged offspring and 102 normal-legged offspring. Assuming that leg length is determined by a single gene with two alleles, how can you explain these results? In your answer, use correct notation of your own choice to indicate the genotypes of the short-legged parents and their short-legged and normal-legged offspring. Also give the expected phenotype for heterozygotes and both kinds of homozygote.
