The Hermann grid illusion is characterised by "shadows" that appear at the intersections of a white grid on a black background. The classical explanation of this illusion from Baumgartner (1960), proposes that the illusion is caused by lateral inhibition in retinal ganglion cells whose receptive field are characterised as on-centre, off-surround.
