Part 1
The first part of the assignment focuses on the development of a GIS-based environmental impact assessment model. In literature we find a growing collection of such models related to wide range of environmental impacts. The four articles provided below are examples of the way GIS is used in EIA/SEA processes. They describe the application of specific impacts models.
• Gontier, M. et al., 2010. Comparing GIS-based habitat models for applications in EIA and SEA. Environmental Impact Assessment Review 30: 8-18
• Geneletti, D. and Dawa, D., 2009. Environmental impact assessment of mountain tourism in developing regions: A study in Ladakh, Indian Himalaya. Environmental Impact
Assessment Review 29: 229-242.
• Hamed, M. and Effat,W., 2007. A GIS-based approach for the screening assessment of noise and vibration impacts from transit projects. Journal of Environmental Management 84: 305-313.
• Koomen, E. et al, 1997. Quantitative analysis of bird disturbance in environmental impact assessment. Third Joint European Conference & Exhibition on Geographical Information, Vienna, Austria.
You are asked to briefly study these articles and then select a specific type of impact model (e.g. a habitat model, noise model). This can be any of the type of models provided in the four articles or another impact model of your own choice. For your selected type of impact model you are requested to find an additional example in scientific literature. Based on the descriptions of these two models you should then provide a short comparison, elaborating upon:
a. The purpose of both models.
b. The type of data and their resolution needed for both models.
c. The methods that are applied to transform input data in impact.
d. The strengths of both models.
e. The weaknesses of both models.
f. Lessons learned and points of improvement for both models.
Deliverable: a popular scientific elaboration, clearly structured with introduction and conclusion, regarding the topics mentioned above (max. 5 pages).
