This geoinquiry looks at the Great Exchange. The Great Exchange was the widespread transfer of plants, animals, precious metals, commodities, culture, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the New World (the Americas) in the Western Hemisphere, and the Old World (Afro-Eurasia) in the Eastern Hemisphere, in the late 15th and following centuries. Some of the exchanges were purposeful; some were accidental or unintended. We narrow our scope to look at production of potato, banana, and maize (corn). Before you open the GEOInquiry where do you think each of these crops was originally grown? Where do you think the production is a maximum today? Now, look at where they are grown today by clicking on content and Potato production current Banana production current Maize production current Next click on Old World / New World. Click on "Crop Origins". Are you surprised where any of the crops originated? Explain. Click on "Great Exchange". Then click on each green ellipse pointing from the Old World and click on each orange rectangle pointing east from the New World. What surprised you? Explain.
