Yeast is genetically altered to change how they metabolize glucose. She gets rid of the glycolysis enzyme phosphoglycerate mutase, and replaces it with two new enzymes; Enzyme 1 - Hydrolyzes the phosphate group off the 3 position of 3-phosophoglycerate to produce glycerate.

Enzyme 2- Kinase that transfers a phosphoryl group from ATP to the 2 potion of the glycerate to produce 2-phosphoglycerate.

1. The yeast are unable to grow in anaerobic conditions. Explain why.In your answer, explain how many ATP molecules are synthesized per glucose processed in anaerobic conditions in normal yeast and in the engineered yeast.

2. The yeast are unable to follow through with gluconeogenesis. You suggest that the problem is that the kinase enzyme she engineered into the yeast probably catalyzes a non-equilibrium reaction. Explain why this would prevent gluconeogenesis from occurring.
