When exploring our solar system with probes or rovers, it is important to know the weight (force due to gravity) of the probe on the surface of the other planet so that, as an engineer, you can design the mechanical parts, e.g. the drivetrain for a rover, accordingly. The weight is calculated by using Newton's second law:
F=mg/gc
where:
F is the weight, lbf
m is the mass of the probe/rover, lbm
g is the local acceleration of gravity, ft/s^2 or m/s^2
gc is a constant, 32.174 (lbm-ft)/(lbf-s^2)
Write a MATLAB code that calculates the weight (forces due to gravity) in lbf on each planet of our solar system and earth's moon for probes/rovers which have a mass between 100 lbm and 300 lbm. Use increments of 20 lbm. Generate a table showing in the first column the mass values and the weights in the remaining columns.
Block D sits freely on the homogeneous bar and experiences a gravitational force of 50N. Homogeneous bar AB experiences a gravitational force of 25 N. What is the force between the bar and block D?
A pipeline terminates in a nozzle of outlet diameter = 0.15 m. The free jet from the nozzle is deflected through 120º by a vane as shown. Water flow rate through this pipe is 0.25 m3/s. Ignoring friction, find the force exerted by the jet on ..
Determine the net change in storage during the year if local municipality is allowed to take 100 MGD from the reservoir. You may neglect infiltration and seepage from the reservoir. Sketch a mas blance of the reservoir.
Determine the basin dimensions (width, length, depth) for a detention time of 3 hours and a length to width ratio of 4 to 1. (use English units)
water is flowing at a velocity of 10ft/s and a depth of 10ft in a channel of rectangular section. find the change in depth and in absolute water level produced by a smooth upward step of 1 ft. a smooth downward step of 1 ft in the channel bed.
How many gallons of mercury (sg=13.54) would weight the same as 5 gallons of castor oil which has a specific weight of 56.69 pcf?
A rectangular concrete channel is 3 m wide and 2 m high. The water 20 deg Celsius in the main channel is 1.5 m deep and is flowing at a rate of 30 m^3/s. determine the flow area, wetted perimeter, and hydraulic radius. Is the flow laminar or turbu..
As a highway patrol officer, you are patricipating in a speed trap. A car passes your patrol car which you clock at 55 mph. One and a half minutes later, your partner in another patrol car situated two miles away from you, clocks the same car at 5..
The superelevation rate is 0.084. Prepare a plot showing the ordinates required for the transition from the tangent section to the full superelevated section, assuming that the pavement width is 7.3 m wide. Make any necessary assumptions.
A tensile test was performed on a metal specimen having a circular cross section with a diameter of 0.50 inch. The gage length is 2 inches. For a load of 13.5 kips, the elongation was 4.66 x 10-3 inches.
The company would like to distribute the songs between the two CDs such that the used space on each CD is about the same. Formulate the problem as an IP, and find the optimal solution.
A quartzite sample in a compression testing machine is 180mm long and 54mm in diameter. what is the stress under a load of 100kN? if the modulus of elasticity is 102kN/mm2, find the strain develope in the sample.
