Assignment - Kinetic analysis

Introduction

The principles of an Industry Standard Kinetic Simulation Package have been covered in the module lecture material. You are required to produce a simulation of a system of your choice using MatlabSimMultibody. The system should be fully modelled by and unique to you and should include results. The scenario should be complex enough to allow you to critically evaluateSimMultibodyas an engineering simulation tool.

The key skills developed in this assignment are:

- Communication - report writing skills, presentation skills
- Use IT effectively - simulation software and word-processed report
- Independent learning - research motion analysis
- Time management - manage class contact, independent working effectively

Module Learning Outcomes addressed in this assignment:

1. User and evaluate industry standard software
2. Assess the need for relevant modelling systems
3. Analyse how certain factors are affecting the accuracy of a simulation
4. Use engineering software effectively and compare exact solutions with simulation generated solution and evaluate differences and characteristics
5. Demonstrate effective research and report writing skills

Choose only one of the scenarios for your assignment:

Model: Double Pendulum

In class we developed a mass spring damper system, use SimMechanics to construct an accurate pendulum that incorporates damping and air resistance. One of the most interesting behaviour with the double pendulum is how the system behaviour's with system variables changes. Examine what plays the most influence in this system. It is commonly thought that this behaviour is unpredictable, however offer suggestions to if this is a true statement. You should start with a ball of 50mm Dia.

Model: Double Mass Spring Damper

In class we made a mass spring damper system, use the model that we made and develop the double mass spring damper. These systems are typically used to represent a suspension system of a car or even an earthquake detection system. The behaviour of the system can be often quite strange to examine, use references to confirm that your model is behaving correctly and experiment by changing the system values and see if the system responds differently in certain conditions.

It will measure 100mm by 100mm by 100mm. The range of mass to examine should range between 50 - 500 Kg

Model: Piston assembly

A motorcycle racing team using the Aprilia 250 V-Twin have approached to discuss the idea of piston assembly configuration improvements, they have provided the IGES files for consideration. They have noted that they are running Nickel cylinder with a mild steel piston which they confirm through testing give a coefficient of friction 0.178. At present the stroke 124mm, as they running this on a bike they are not willing to accept more than 20% on cylinder length. They have also noted that the cylinder sits at a 90 degree offset.

Modelling Tasks:

1. Establish a working model in SimMultibody.

2. Using present theory generate a balancing validation of the model to indicate you works validity.

3. Make design changes to the present configuration and report recommendations for improvements.

Model: Suspension

A formula one race team has approached and informed us that they are developing a new race car. They have confirmed that they do not mind the assumption that the weight of the main body can be the same as normal 700Kg. They have delivered us with an IGES file that denotes all positions of the suspension, as they have not detail the materials used for the assembly it is assumed we can assign our own sensible equivalent. The reason they have come to use is they are requesting spring damper values that are set to critical damping (a bump and a bit).

Modelling Tasks:

1. Simplify the provided IGES model to establish a working model in SimMultibody.

2. Using present theory generate a spring damper validation of the model to indicate you works validity.

3. Make design changes to the present configuration and report recommendations for the requirements.

Model: Gear Box

Ducati have approached with complaints about their 916 gear box. Their major concerns are about customers who claim that the assembly gives a lack of response and sometimes refuses to go into gear. They have provided the assembly in IGES form and have requested you as an external analysts to examine the maximum output of the gearbox and suggest any possible failings in the performance. They have confirmed that the gears are made from a 1023 Carbon Steel alloy and through testing found that the damping ratio (considering friction and lubrication) between 0.001 - 0.0001. Thus they would like to have a realistic representation of how efficient the gear box operates.

1. Simplify the provided IGES model to establish a working model in SimMultibody.

2. Using present theory generate a gearbox validation of the model to indicate you works validity.

3. Make design changes to the present configuration and report recommendations for the requirements.
