When More Immune Response is Not Better was an RN in the pediatric intensive care unit in spring 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic I cared for children with a wide range of conditions and diseases. One dayI was assigned to admit a patient from the emergency departmentTrevor was a 15-yearold male who was previously healthyHe was tested for SARSCoV-2 in the ED, and the test came back positive, even though he had not had COVID-19 symptomsTrevor presented to my unit with fever, nausea and an unusual skin rash that had begun 3 days ago. When I assessed Trevor, I found him to be drowsy but responsiveH followed commands appropriately and answered questions. His heart rate was higher than normal and he had a fever. A generalized rash was present across his upper chest , neck, and back. He complained of abdominal pain and heart palpitations Because of Trevor's positive COVID-19 test , we maintained isolation precautions in the room. I gave him medication for his fever and monitored his vital signs closely. I administered intravenous fluids to counteract dehydration collected blood samples and sent them to the laboratory.
