Euphoria has a great cast with tons of gender and sexuality diversity, the show also does a great job and challenging social norms and gender binaries. Jules who is one of the main characters is a bisexual transgender teenage girl; and as the show begins it doesn't explicitly imply that she is trans; and her gender though important to her character is not a focal point of her characters development. The show also includes a lot of bisexual characters such as Rue, and Elliot; "in contrast to gay characters and their stereotypes, bisexual characters are virtually unknown on TV. Writers don't seem to know how to portray them..." (Queer as Tropes), the writers did a great job presenting these LGBTQ characters just as "normal" teens facing "normal" everyday problems just as other high school kids do. The show does a good job at not labeling the characters; instead, it just lets them be teenagers instead of confining them into stereotypes. Rue and Jules relationship as seen in this clip is a big part of the show and unlike many other shows their relationship is not centered around being gay/trans/bi but instead it is portrayed like any of the other couples on a show as typical teenage love story. While the show destigmatizes gender identity, it also challenges traditional masculinity through Nate and his dad who are both closeted homosexuals who want to portray a extremely masculine persona. The idea of these extreme masculine expectations placed upon a lot of the men in the show are examples of how harmful these expectations can be on teens especially. Mckay is also an example of black hypermasculinity, his father sets unrealistic expectations on him to be very athletic and wants him to become a professional football player. The show has been criticized for it's racial and cultural diversity but when it comes to LGBTQ it would pass the Vito Russo test with flying colors. The show is aimed at teenage/ young adult audiences, so I think this representation is important for those viewers who can relate to the characters. The show being on HBO has its limitations because you have to pay for it so only those with the means can see the show which is a disadvantage.
