A gas in a piston-cylinder undergoes a Carnot power cycle. The gas expands and compresses isothermally between two reservoirs at 600 K and 300 K. Determine a) the thermal efficiency, b) the percent change in the thermal efficiency if i) the hot reservoir is increased 20% while the cold remains the same K, ii) the cold reservoir decreases 20% while the hot remains the same and iii) if the hot reservoir increases 20% and the cold decreases 20%.

Determine the power required to drive the compressor : A certain industrial process requires a steady 0.75 kg/s supply of compressed air at 500 kPa, at a maximum temperature of 30C. This air is to be supplied by installing a compressor and after cooler. Local ambient conditions are 100 kPa, 20C. Using a ..
What is the mass flow rate of air : A compressor receives 0.1 kg/s R-134a at 150 kPa, -10C and delivers it at 1000 kPa, 40C. The power input is measured to be 3 kW. The compressor has heat transfer to air at 100 kPa coming in at 20C and leaving at 30C (i.e. like a heat exchanger). What..
Determine the fin efficiency : Consider a two- dimensional, straight triangular fin of Length L= 50mm and base thickness t= 20mm. The thermal conductivity of the fin is k= 25 W/mK. The base temperature is T_b= 50 degrees Celsius, and the fin is exposed to convection conditions cha..
Assumptions about the drop size and the unit cost of energy : A 1982 U.S. Department of Energy article (FS#204) states that a leak of one drip of hot water per second can cost $1.00 per month. Making reasonable assumptions about the drop size and the unit cost of energy, determine if this claim is reasonable. S..
Gas in a piston-cylinder undergoes a carnot power cycle : A gas in a piston-cylinder undergoes a Carnot power cycle. The gas expands and compresses isothermally between two reservoirs at 600 K and 300 K.
Developing an appreciation for hr competencies 2020 : Understanding the Trends that are re-shaping the world and understanding the Future Workplace and Future Workforce -2020
What is the steam quality exiting the low pressure turbine : Reheat is added to an ideal Rankine steam power cycle to improve it’s efficiency and turbine exit quality. Steam enters the HP turbine at 15 MPa and 600C. Steam exits the HP turbine at 4 MPa and enters the boiler for reheat. Then the steam enters the..
The fraction of steam extracted for feed water heating : Consider an ideal Rankine cycle with a single open feed water heater. The boiler pressure is 800 psia, and the condenser pressure is 2 psia. Steam is extracted from the turbine to heat the feed water at 90 psia. Steam enters the turbine at 1000F.
