Topic Proposal
The topic proposal's main goal is to lay out a game plan for an essay. Its main goal is to identify fixate upon a stable theme, often in the form of the thesis statement. In general, here are some basic guidelines related to topic proposals:
Your proposal should answer the following questions thoroughly, but it should be written in an essay-based format in paragraphs, not a list of your answers.
Your proposal should be 2 pages long, Font 12, double spaced.
1. What is your thesis or research question (the thing about your topic you want to find out)? Your topic must be opinionated and well-phrased and formulated, rather than a petty observation about your topic. Why is this topic important? Why should the reader know about it? Your thesis needs to make a statement about the topic, not just announce the topic. Avoid using "I".
2. How do you plan on supporting this thesis/research question? Outline your 5-7 body paragraphs, including examples and details.
3. Your conclusion should restate the thesis in different words and wrap up the essay.
What (3) outside, scholarly sources do you plan on using? You don't have to read all of them yet, but try to have at least 3 good sources ready by the time you turn in the proposal. Such an approach attempts to ensure that you don't go about getting sources at the last minute. It also ensures that you steer clear of topics of which you cannot find adequate resources.
RESEARCH PROJECT
Proposal
This assignment required you to create an overview of your research project based on one of the topics from the list provided. You will submit a proposal of approximately 500 words that outlines your research question, working thesis, and key supporting points. The proposal should offer the full bibliography/works cited entry, along with an analysis of credibility and explanation of use, for three of the sources that you intend to use in your paper.
ESSAY
This part of the assignment will require you to analyse and discuss your topic - it is not just a presentation of facts and evidence! The paper should be approximately 1500 words in length and must follow MLA formatting and citation guidelines throughout. The final paper must also contain the following elements:
- An introduction, conclusion, and clearly identifiable thesis statement.
- Main discussion section 4-7 paragraphs of evidence, examples, expert testimony etc.
- MLA style bibliography that includes a minimum of 5 sources. At least 3 of these sources must be academic/scholarly in nature and each source must be cited at least once in the body of the paper.
PLEASE NOTE: No more than 30% of your paper may be another's referenced works or ideas - if your paper simply reassembles sources from elsewhere without addition of your own thoughts, then this constitutes a breach of academic honesty/integrity and could result in a grade of 0 on the assignment.
PRESENTATION
You will deliver a 10-minute presentation to the class based on your essay. This presentation provides you with an opportunity to share your research findings with your colleagues in an academic setting. As such, you should adhere to the formal conventions of a presentation, such as:
• NO clip art, photographs/ cartoons or illustrations on slides unless they are relevant as evidence.
• Tables, charts and graphs may be included if useful and discreet, but must be cited properly according to MLA standards.
• Spell correctly and avoid grammatical errors.
• Professional tone and appearance.
