Read the following hypothetical situation and consider your response for this discussion.
You found a terrific job after graduating from Pima. You're one of a small team of four marketing consultants working for the Phoenix Suns professional basketball team. As part of your job, you meet several company representatives who want exposure at the Phoenix NBA games, for example, ads in the stadium, game programs and team magazine, special seats in the upper concourse, beverage cups with the company logo on the sides, etc.
After one of the recent games, one of the reps from Terrific Tire Company told you that he can reliably forecast the winners in several of the games covering the betting spread. He gives you the lowdown on five games for the following week. As you follow the games for the next week, you find that he's right. He tells you later that he has connections in the referee organization and you can both make a significant amount of money if you follow his selections.
Obviously, you could take this story to your boss especially since the Suns won a game against the champion Golden State Warriors when the Suns were clearly the less talented team. But, chances are you would probably lose the ad revenue from Terrific Tire and could cause a storm of protest from the NBA referee organization. Or, you could begin to bet heavily on his selections and pocket the profits - after all, you're not getting paid all that much.
- What responsibility do you think The Suns have to the league for reporting these allegations?
- What are the pros/cons associated with telling your boss?
- In the end, what will you do and why?
- Describe an ethical dilemma you or someone you know has experienced in the workplace. What happened?
