Research on "Primary teacher's self-efficacy and attitudes towards inclusion of SEN/ALN children in mainstream school : Teacher's work ability"
Rationale
Inclusive education has become the Cliche of the modern educational system both in developed and developing countries ( Farrell, Dyson, Hutcheson&Gallannaugh,2007). Educational programmes for students with disabilities have traditionally been built upon the assumption that a variety of service delivery options needs to be available. The internal institute of democracy and electoral assistance( IDEA) act of individuals with disabilities education requires that a continuum of placement options be available to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
In both cases, teachers' attitude inclusive education(IE)and their sense of self-efficacy in managing pupils with SEN have been argued to play crucial role in approaching new challenges such as that of IE ( O'Shea, 2006).Self-efficacy in teaching is the belief that one's teaching can influence how well, how all students learn ,including those who are demotivated or demanding (Sharma et al, 2012 ).
Factors influencing the attitudes of primary school teachers in directing elementary school students to a normal school has had a significant impact upon my professional practice and although those factors have been identified, teacher attitudes and self-efficiency have not been reviewed when referring children with special circumstances to general schools based on the work ability of primary schoolteachers.
Research aims.
• To identify the factors associated with primary school teachers' attitudes towards inclusion of SEN/ALN children in regular school.
• To examine the relationship between teacher self-efficacy and teacher attitudes towards the inclusion of special needs children in regular school.
Research questions
1. What is teachers self - efficacy?
2. How teacher's self-efficacy positively relates to perceived work ability ?
3. What are the factors associated with primary teachers attitudes towards inclusion of SEN/ALN children in regular school?
4. How teachers self-efficacy directly impact SEN/ALN students performance?
5. What is the relationship between Teacher's self-efficacy and their attitudes towards the inclusion of pupils with SEN/ALN needs?
Assignment - Protocol for dissertation
Below is guidance as to how this might be structured:
1. Topic for Investigation / Working Title of Research
2. Introduction (450-500 words)
Rationale for the proposed topic
This will often be related to the professional role of the researcher.
Research Aims
These express what you hope to achieve and provide the thread which joins together the whole of the study. Examples may include: "to explore ..", "to investigate ..", "to examine ..", "to analyse ...".
Research Questions
You should identify in this section your key research question(s) or hypothesis(es) which will provide a clear focus for your work.
Identification of previous research in the field (800-1,000 words)
Identify the topics which your literature search will cover. What are the most significant areas of research that will be used to underpin your studies? What key texts do you propose to use?
Proposed Research Methodology (1,300-1,500 words)
How do you propose to gather the data that will enable you to answer the questions you have posed? (eg: by conducting semi -structured interviews / by undertaking classroom-based observations / by analysing school performance data)
What research design will meet the needs of this study? (eg action research / case study). Ensure that you make a sound case for fitness for purpose of your proposal.
How will you present and analyse your data? Include here any ethical considerations.
You may include a suggested time frame for your research here.
Intended Outcomes (150-200 words)
What do you hope to have achieved having answered your research question(s)? How might this impact upon your personal / professional development? How will (eg) your institution benefit from the work? Can you anticipate the implications / opportunities for further work in the field? What would be an appropriate way of disseminating the results of research and who would be the appropriate audience for such dissemination activity?
