FV1105 Introduction to Hazards and Materials - University of Central Lancashire
Task
Write a report on how to deal with hazardous materials in an emergency response capability, focusing on the health and safety of humans, and the environment. How to mitigate against the risk of fire and explosion, due to loss of containment, how to protect the environment. It is important to understand and analyse safe working cordons for decontamination. How the use of MSDS sheets - along with - UN HAZARD Classification System - how these can influence Tactical decisions, and the type or selection of PPE used for such incidents.
Your Consideration Document should include:
1. An Introduction - who you are, why you are writing this report, what it will be used for.
2. Aim and Objectives; the overall Aim of the Report and Objectives (SMART objectives) and how you will achieve the Aim.
3. The Main Body of the Report
This section should include details of:
• A description of your proposed incident including types of hazards -material involved - scale, duration and impact (on people, infrastructure, environment, reputation, etc).
• What key sources of information would aid the incident commander in dealing with the mitigation of the incident.
• Effectiveness of containment to mitigate against loss of containment.
• What key factors would influence the decision to set up a decontamination zone.
• How you resolve future incidents.
4. Conclusion; Lessons learnt, was the incident dealt with successfully or not? Your reasons to support this. What, if anything, could be improved for any future events of this nature?
5. Recommendations; for improvements (SMART Recommendations)
Learning outcome 1 Use and demonstrate how to find out the relevant product information from either UN HAZARD. Classification System, or MSDS (material safety data sheets) to be able to deal with a loss of containment incident safely. Identify hazards associated with a variety of substances and describe the appropriate way of dealing with incidents involving them, to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. Identify potential risks to human health, fire and explosion and the environment due to hazardous materials.
Learning outcome 2. Identify safe working areas taking into account environmental factors of wind speed and direction, size and scope of exclusion zones, the correct use of PPE (personal protective equipment). Where to set up inner and outer cordons along with a decontamination zone.
