Future trends and patterns in general American culture & sub-cultures
The discussion questions (underlined) are these:
1. What do you believe are the most significant general U.S. cultural patterns? Why? Or Why not?
2. Also, play the role of "intercultural communication prognosticator" and cover what are key cultural trends or patterns that might take place in the general American culture in the years ahead. What do you think will be the main (2 or 3) cultural trends that will take place in future years? Why? Or Why not?
(Chapter 7, It is worthwhile to take a close look at Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's value orientation theory that begins on page 370 in our intercultural communication text. The entire section on cultural patterns and trends built on Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's foundation of value orientation theory. It's really quite good to thumb through the section.)
3. To focus more particularly on intercultural communication in the context of the general U. S. culture, what communication skills would be needed to effectively communicate with those from the general U. S. culture that are from sub-groups or sub-cultures? (compare and contrast here)
It seems that we actually need an intercultural communication repertoire that has at least 2 or 3 primary components:
1) One part for communicating effectively in the general American culture;
2) Another part for communicating with particular sub-cultures or sub-groups in the American culture; and
3) A communication repertoire for communicating with other cultures from outside the American culture sub-groups. Number 3 would include intercultural communication (between different cultures); international relations; international business; and
international (intercultural) consulting.
Also, there is an attachment of a very solid article from Pew Research that highlights demographic patterns and trends in the foreseeable future regarding the general American culture.
