Most of the individuals of a shrub species that blooms in the early spring produce flowers at the time when the insect species that pollinate their flowers emerge from their winter dormant period. This synchrony of flowering developed because of the differential reproductive success of individual plants with genes that resulted in flowering at the appropriate time compared to plants with genetic variations resulting in flowering either before or after the emergence of the pollinating insect species. This genetic change in the shrub population over many generations is an example of which fundamental quality shared by all living organisms: Life is organized, Living things must maintain an internal constancy, Living things react to environmental change, Living things grow, develop, and reproduce, OR Living things adapt?
