Question
Functional Decomposition: Functional Decomposition is the process of putting a larger program and decomposing it down into modules, and those modules are based on actions that are preformed. Because there is such a strong emphasis on functions, functional decomposition is really useful for analyzing programs written in procedural languages. There is enough flexibility to use functional decomposition in object-oriented languages, but it is not the best fit for it. It can also lead to issues with the movement of data from methods to main. here is the use case in functional decomposition: Authentication The student signs into the registration system. Specification The student specifies which course they want to register for Presentation The system shows the available options Selection The student selects which classes they want to register with. Confirmation The system either confirms the registration, or cancels it based off any conditions not met. Object-Oriented Decomposition Object-Oriented Decomposition makes modules based off of actors, rather than actions. And these modules are described through what actions they preform. So in a way it is the inverse of Functional Decomposition. Based on my research, object-oriented decomposition seems a lot more complicated than Functional Decomposition, with UML diagrams having a lot more components than a functional diagram.
