Yes, a full-time police officer can serve as a volunteer firefighter in their town. They are volunteering their time, and it does not affect their job as an officer. Being a volunteer firefighter shouldn’t be viewed differently then spending your off time as a volunteer in a homeless shelter, or other organization. I think it would be ok for police departments to give officers who serve as volunteer firefighter extra credit towards promotion as long as that isn’t the only volunteer opportunity they offer extra credit for. If it was only volunteer firefighting that wouldn’t be fair because not every officer would have that opportunity. If multiple volunteer opportunities offered extra credit, then it would be fair to officers who serve their community in more ways than one to get extra credit towards promotion. If an officer were to get injured as a volunteer firefighter, there pay, and pension would depend on their state law or department policies, for example in Georgia the injury must occur “in the course of” employment while performing the employer’s duties, so something done while off duty ay not applicable to their workman’s compensation (Adkisson 2017).
