Bias and prejudice in the Media

This task requires you to analyse bias and/or prejudice in a news report. You can complete this task using a newspaper article, television or radio news report, a current affairs story, or a website. (Note: you are NOT looking for an article on bias and/or prejudice, rather any article and identifying the bias and/or prejudice in the article).

Please ensure that you have identified a report that features bias and/or prejudice. If you do not find one at first, you will need to keep searching until you find one that features bias and/or prejudice.

Then, respond to the following instructions and questions in your separate document:

1. (a) Provide the title of the article, media report or website.
(b) Where did you find this article or story? (Write one sentence)
(c) What is the purpose of the text? (Write one sentence)
(d) What is the audience for this text? (Write one sentence)
(e) What is the context for this text? (Write one sentence)

2. Is there any bias and/or prejudice in the headline or title of the story? (State ‘Yes' or ‘No' and explain why in one sentence)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Analysis of a passage from the novel

Review the passages in Chapter 34 of Pride and Prejudice (see pages 51-54 of the learning resource) where an argument ensues following Mr Darcy's proposal of marriage to Elizabeth. Then use the passages to help you respond to the following questions.

You will be looking at how each character has used persuasive techniques to express their points of view and show your understanding of the surrounding events in the novel that affected Elizabeth and Mr Darcy and caused prejudice and bias.

In Act III Scene I Tybalt and Romeo have a confrontation that leads to Mercutio's death. Revisit the scene and respond to the questions below.

Assessment Task 3

Bias and Prejudice

There are many scenes which show bias and/or prejudice, either from one character towards another person or a group of people. Think about the way women are treated in the film, Juliet is expected to obey her father and marry Paris. When she expresses her feelings he dismisses her. The feud between the houses of Montague and Capulet also shows long-held prejudices which have caused entrenched hatred.

6. Select 1-2 characters and discuss how bias and/or prejudice are demonstrated by them in the film. Use examples from the film to support your response.
