Problem

Read and analyze the following questions to answer clearly, precisely and concisely.

Mr. Rivera had a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in the left cerebral hemisphere and presents paralysis of the right arm. Mr. Rivera cannot understand why his right arm is paralyzed if the neurologist assured him that the affected side of the brain was the left. The patient is sure that the doctor is wrong. If you had to attend to Mr. Rivera, how would you explain what is happening to him?

In a lumbar puncture, a needle is inserted between 2 of the lumbar vertebrae (below L3) into the spinal canal to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. From what you know of the anatomy of the spinal cord, he explains, why is it safer to perform the procedure in that region and not in a higher one?
