Manifest Destiny still exists as the philosophy that embraces American history as a whole. Whether it be freedom of religion, freedom of speech, or simply freedom to pursue one's own dreams. Americans have always pictured the United States as a sort of utopia for individual freedom. Many endorsed the idea, but the majority of Americans rejected the concept. Manifest Destiny became one of several campaign issues during the 1844 presidential election. This was because it was used by Democrats in the 1840s to justify the Mexican American War. Historians believed it implied its internal limitations and the issue of slavery, and never became a national priority of the United States. Furthermore, there was never a set of principles that actually defined manifest destiny. To my understanding it was a general idea rather than a specific policy that was made with a motto. Its an expression of conviction in the morality and value of popular ideas of the era including American exceptionalism and Romantic nationalism.
