A four-station transfer line is to be designed without buffers. Demand dictates that 100 products must be produced every hour the line is in operation. A cycle time of 0.5 minutes is being considered. Experience with similar lines has indicated that each station will fail at random about once every 500 cycles. Downtime will average about 6 minutes per station failure. Station failures are independent. The line must also be down for an average of 5 minutes every hour of scheduled time for maintenance, loading, and adjustment. Determine the reliability of this transfer line. Will the goal of 100 units per hour be met on average?
