Summarize chapter four of the book Cultural psychology third edition by Steven J. Heins. Discuss the thesis, and main idea of the chapter, and a question someone may have after reading the chapter.
An "exit bag" - also known as a "suicide kit" - is a large plastic bag fashioned with a drawcord at the opening. The bag is to be placed over the head and the cord tightened around the neck. The bag is often used in conjunction with anesthetic gas, such as nitrogen, nitrous oxide, or helium, which can alleviate the feeling of panic and oxygen hunger experienced during suffocation. The exit bag was first described by Derke Humphry in his wildly popular book Final Exit. It was, and still is, one of the most accessible and user-friendly methods of self-deliverance.
In 2011, Oregon passed legislation making it illegal to sell exit bags.
In California in 2013, a 92-year-old woman was sentenced to 5 years' probation for failing to file federal tax returns on her exit bag business. According to court records, she sold upwards of 1,300 kits for $40 each. Four people in San Diego County, where the conviction took place, had used the kits to kill themselves and none of them had been terminally ill. She admitted to making $66,717 and paying no taxes on her earnings.
Give reasons why it should be and should not be legal to buy and sell exit bags.
