Question
Four identical electric charges +q are placed at the corners of a square. If they were released, they would fly apart. Find the negative charge -Q that if placed in the center of the square would bring them into equilibrium. Hints: Find and use the unit vector for a 45 degree angle. The dimensions of the square do not matter, you will find, pick your own side length. This can be solved by considering the forces on any one corner charge.
If one of these two charge is negative will there be any point between the charges on the line joining them where the net electric field is zero? Explain why. (Hint: For instance consider charge +q is replaced by a charge -q)
