After reviewing the Learning Resources Chapter, "Foundations of Interpersonal Communication" in Pearson's Foundations of Interpersonal Communication, respond to the following question.

Consider the 8 principles of interpersonal communication explained in the Week 1 Learning Resources. Provide a brief explanation of each principle (2-3 sentences). For four of the principles, also include an example from your life experiences. Number each principle. Be sure to indicate which principle you find most important and why.

  1. Selective-people choose who they want to have interpersonal relationships with since it requires time, energy and commitment;
  2. Systemic-occurs within social systems wherein people are interdependent;
  3. Unique-can't replace intimates, people aren't interchangeable;
  4. Ongoing process-evolves dynamically over time and is continuously changing but is linked to the past and influences the future;
  5. Reciprocal interaction-individuals communicate simultaneously, consistently and share responsibility for effective communication; interpersonal communication is characterized by mutuality;
  6. Between individuals-who develop and sustain a relationship;
  7. Personal knowledge-through interpersonal communication, individuals come to know one another deeply;
  8. Create (shared) meaning-the heart of interpersonal relationships; meanings grow out of shared history.

Having now read the Learning Resources chapter, "Foundations of Interpersonal Communication" in Pearson's Foundations of Interpersonal Communication, respond to the following question.

This chapter addressed four specific areas of interpersonal competence. They included the following abilities: (1) thinks critically and mindfully, (2) skillful, (3) culturally aware and sensitive, and (4) ethical. Assess your interpersonal competence and provide a separate paragraph for each ability. Be sure to include both strengths and weaknesses. Be descriptive.
